Female Health

If you have a female health disorder, we can help.

Menstrual Disorders:
It is unfortunately all too common to hear female patients with problems with their periods, whether it is irregular, painful, too heavy, or is preceded by mood swings, water retention, food cravings, or sore breasts. A woman’s menses should simply consists of her having uneventful bleeding, of minimal to moderate amount, every 28-30 days, without any other symptoms existing. There is no reason why a woman has to suffer every month of her life or take birth control pills (BCP) to achieve relief from her own body processes. BCP can cause nutrient deficiencies, especially B6 and other B vitamins and suppress a woman’s hormones; they should be AVOIDED as much as possible.

PCOS, polycystic ovarian syndrome:
This is another common problem I see in my office. In this condition, woman are generally struggling with not having any periods, being a little hirsuit, and many women can be overweight. Naturopathic care through diet, exercise and supplements can have an immediate effect on regulating periods and even allowing pregnancy to occur.

Perimenopause:
Perimenopausal problems are common when women reach their 40s, and their cycles still occur, but many be irregular or change from how it used to be. This may include growing uterine fibroids or ovarian cysts, or, having an increase in frequency and amount of bleeding. Some women develop “Dysfunctional Uterine Bleeding” which means they may continually bleed for months; this is a serious condition which needs to be dealt with naturally but aggressively to prevent and treat iron anemia. Having perimenopause be smooth and easy for a woman is possible using naturopathic modalities.

Menopause:
Menopause is defined as a woman not having a period for a year. It has unfortunately negative connotations of women turning into “crones”, and losing their energy, luster and beauty. While this is far from true, and women should NEVER consider menopause anything but a natural change in life, some women do suffer from symptoms of menopause. This can include hot flashes and night sweats, headaches, mood swings, loss of libido, dry vagina, hair loss or thinning hair, increased facial hair, problems with concentration or memory, lowered energy, weight gain, urinary leakage. Once a women enters menopause she is at higher risk for osteoporosis and cardiovascular disease. Naturopathic medicine has a huge repertory of natural ways for a woman to enter her middle ages feeling confident, healthy, strong, and hopeful.

Hypothyroidism:
Many patients present with low thyroid functioning that only an astute doctor could recognize. This may depend on the patient’s presentation via their symptoms or their physical exam. It may also be related to blood work or body temperature analysis. Without a fully functioning thyroid, it is hard for the body to work normally–the metabolism is slowed and so are all the body processes, including hormone production. The skin gets dry, the hair thin and dry, the periods can be affected, fluid can accumulate, mood can slow, energy can disappear. Oftentimes, the thyroid and adrenals can be weak together, giving the patient a double whammy of low energy and functioning. Standard MDs commonly miss subclinical hypothyroidism, but I diagnose it regularly and treat it accordingly.

Bio-Identical Hormones:
As a lecturer on Bioidentical Hormones, I am very capable at prescribing all types of natural hormones to women (and men!), including estrogens, progesterone, DHEA, cortisol, testosterone, and thyroid medicine. I use compounding pharmacists to specifically create individual formulas unique to each patient’s need.
I have worked with women for 20 years in my practice. You can be sure that you are under good, compassionate care when you see me for a female disorder!
