Inflammatory Bowel Disease

Inflammatory bowel disease is an auto-immune condition whereby the lining of the intestinal tract is severely inflammed, which can then cause ulcers, edema, bleeding, and damage. IBD typically causes significant lowered quality of life for patients who suffer from it. There are two main types: Ulcerative Colitis (UC) which is limited to the large intestine and occurs in one specific area; Crohn Disease (CD), which can affect any segment of the intestinal tract from the mouth to the anus and can consist of “skip lesions” which manifests in different areas. There is a genetic component to both IBDs

IBD presents generally with cramping, diarrhea where the stool may contain blood or pus, constipation, urgency, weight loss, fevers, fatigue, joint pain, fistulas or abscesses, abdominal pain. There are many extra-intestinal problems which are often seen in IBD patients: other auto-immune disease development like ankylosing spondylitis or primary sclerosing cholangitis; kidney stones; gallstones; canker sores; eye problems; and, arthritis.

Patients can easily have up to 20 (or more) bowel movements a day. This can obviously interfere with their life in general, and it can be difficult to get all their nutrition in and thrive; IBD also oftentimes affects their work, their relationships, and their emotional mindsets. IBD patients can develop intestinal malignancies, osteoporosis, an

Patients will undergo a comprehensive evaluation upon diagnosis, including blood work, barium enemas, ultrasounds, CT/MRIs, colonscopy, and other procedures as necessary.

IBD patients are routinely dosed various medications: aminosalicylates, antibiotics, corticosteroids; immune-modulating drugs such as Immuran or 6-mercaptopurine; or tumor necrosis factor alpha inhibitors, Humira or Remicade. Some of these drugs can have serious side effects on patients. Surgery is also performed when necessary; it can cure UC, but when a segment of Crohn disease is removed, another segment elsewhere will typically recur.

All patient should also stop smoking, as tobacco has a serious negative effect on both IBDs.

Naturopathic physicians do some non-standard but hugely enlightening tests with IBD patients to help find the reasons the IBD exists.

Our analysis includes:

1. 1.5 hour intake to find all etiological factors associated with the development of the IBD

2. Food allergy IgG testing

3. Stool analysis to discern levels of beneficial bacteria and any bacteria pathogens which could be setting up chronic inflammation.

4. SIBO (small intestine bacterial overgrowth) breath test.

5. Constitutional homeopathic intake.

6. Nutritional analysis of body.

7. Diet Diary

8. Adrenal analysis for high cortisol and/or low DHEA

9. Digestive enzyme analysis

The comprehensive naturopathic treatment of IBD consists in:

1. Reducing the auto-immunity expression.

2. Reducing the pro-inflammatory cytokines from diet.

3. Treating all imbalances found in the tests above.

4. A specific diet individual to the patients needs, including Specific Carbohydrate Diet, Food Allergy Avoidance, Anti-inflammatory Diet.

5. Supporting the nutrition of the patient through either IVs, or appropriate and well-dosed supplements.

6. Healing up the gut including: probiotics, botanicals and nutrients which soothe and heal the lining of the gut, anti-inflammatories.

7. Teaching the patient how to handle stresses better.

8. Giving a constitutional homeopathic remedy
